Job Description

The Finance Officer (Tax) will support the organization’s tax compliance framework by ensuring accurate tax computations, timely statutory remittances, proper documentation, and adherence to all applicable tax regulations. The role is responsible for minimizing tax risk exposure while ensuring full compliance with Nigerian tax laws and regulatory requirements.

Job Details

Tax Compliance & Computation

  • Prepare and review accurate tax computations and schedules for VAT, Withholding Tax (WHT), PAYE, Company Income Tax (CIT), Tertiary Education Tax, Stamp Duties, and other applicable statutory levies.
  • Ensure timely filing and remittance of all statutory taxes in line with regulatory deadlines.
  • Compute monthly, quarterly, and annual tax liabilities and reconcile discrepancies where necessary.

Documentation & Record Keeping

  • Maintain organized and up-to-date tax records, schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure proper filing (physical and electronic) of tax returns, acknowledgment receipts, and payment evidence.
  • Maintain detailed tax ledgers and ensure all tax-related entries are accurately posted in the accounting system.

Reconciliation & Reporting

  • Reconcile tax accounts in the general ledger and investigate variances.
  • Prepare periodic tax reports for management review.
  • Support the preparation of tax provisions and disclosures for financial statements.

Audit & Regulatory Liaison

  • Support tax audits, investigations, and reviews by providing required documentation and analysis.
  • Assist in responding to queries from tax authorities (e.g., FIRS, State Internal Revenue Services).
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory updates and circulars issued by relevant tax bodies.

Tax Planning & Advisory Support

  • Assist the Group Tax Manager in implementing tax planning strategies to optimize tax efficiency.
  • Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess the impact on the organization.
  • Provide internal guidance on tax compliance requirements for new transactions or initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • 2–4 years of relevant experience in tax compliance, preferably within a corporate or financial services environment.
  • Professional certification (ICAN, ACCA, or CITN) or progress toward certification is an added advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of Nigerian tax laws and statutory regulations.
